Written for [livejournal.com profile] 31_days. Prompt February 01: a beastly proposal

“Don’t be afraid,” said the old woman, her voice sickly sweet. “We’re all friends here.”

The young homunculus stepped into the hovel. Her head brushed against the entryway and she soon found her head and shoulders to be covered in a fine layer of soot. The room was simple: a small table surrounded by threadbare chairs. The floors and walls unkempt and stank of the animals which had previously lived there. “I normally keep better accommodations,” said the woman, “but I need this place to conduct our business.” She motioned toward a chair, smiling. The homunculus had not choice but to sit down.

“Why did you come for me?” asked the homunculus once she took her seat.

“This one has no tact.” She looked to the corner to see a man, or what she thought was man, in the corner. He sauntered up to her and pulled up the hem of what appeared to be a skirt. She understood: he too had the Ouroboros tattoo. “I’m the same as you.” He reached within a pocket of that small skirt and pulled out a handful of small red stone. “I’ve got treats!” he said gleefully.

The small bit of pride within the back of her mind told her to stay still, but a more primitive, aggressive part of pushed her forward, causing the homunculus to snatch the stones from his hands. She curled in slightly and began to munch on them.

“They’re all the same, aren’t they?” asked the man. “They all want that little bit of truth.”

“Don’t be so harsh,” said the old woman. “You were once exactly like her.” The old woman crept toward her and placed her hands on the homunculus’ shoulders. “You see, dear, we all know what it’s like to be in your position. Most of us in our organization are just like you. They know the fear of the first awakening and rush that comes from the Red Stone. But you and I, and the rest of my companions, have one thing in common. We all understand one thing, don’t we?”

She nodded. Her mind was always flashing to that first moment of cognition, to the blood that covered the room, and to the look of horror that was plastered across the bloodied man’s face. “I know abandonment. I know what it’s like to be hated.”

“So do we all, dear. So do we all.” The old woman’s grip tightened. “And we will make them all pay. We have operatives all across the nation. We could use a good girl like you: desirable and, one day, in command.”

“I don’t understand you.”

“What I’m saying is that I want you to join me and my comrades. We will one day rule this country. On that day, you will get whatever your mind can fathom. What do you want most, girl?”

“I…I don’t know,” she stuttered.

“They never do right off the bat,” said the man.

“Hush!” The old woman crossed in front of her, looked down at her with cold, dark eyes. “We’re the only ones who understand you. We’re the only ones who care. Together, we have the power to control a people who have all turned their backs on us. What will you do?”

What was there to do? She had no issue with the people. Her problem was just one man. However, if this one man reacted to her in such a way, how would the other react? What would they do when the realized she wasn’t one of them? She wasn’t sure she wanted to find out. “I suppose I have no choice.”

“Don’t put it that way, dear. One day, I’m sure you’ll feel at home with us.” The old woman looked over to the man and said, “Bring up Gluttony. He should meet our new apprentice.” Once the man vanished, she turned back to the homunculus and said, “You’ll see, dear. We are all really quite accommodating. My name is Dante and I call my companion Envy. We’re all going to be one happy family.”
