OK I totally didn't expect to be moved by Kamina's death but I totally was. I loved that he twisted the whole "believe in the Kamina who believes in you" to "believe in the person that I believe in" thing. It was not longer a "believe in me" thing; it was all about believing in the self. He readily admitted that Simon was mature and ready to take on command of the crew. He relinquished command in a highly dignified way. While I may not think much of Kamina's "think and act fast" philosophy, he really showed a bit of maturity and he recognized something else was going to move everyone forward. And the flash cuts of everyone's reactions: great. There was no need for overemoting. The snapshots captured everything that needed to be said.
As for the Kamina/Yoko kiss, I was glad that, while Simon was heavily disappointed (understatement), he recognized that Yoko's romantic affairs were her own business. You can barely get a real man to recognize such a thing, much less a fictional character. It just made me love Simon a little bit. That said, I felt for him. He is a young kid. Having his "brother" and his crush kiss must have been devastating. It's great that he could pull it together for the end.
I'll have the TCM/Warner Garbo Silent collection in my hands by the end of the week. My excitement knows few bounds. After viewing a couple of her talkies, I really want to see some early stuff. And seeing as I have seen bits of Flesh and the Devil, I'm eager to see the whole thing and in correct context. If it proves itself to be worth it (and I'm sure it will), I'll probably order their Keaton Collection (his last two silents plus his first talkie). Keaton plus MGM is a toxic mix, but I really want to see The Cameraman and Spite Marriage. We'll have to see.
