X: Volumes 10 and 11
I finished about thirty minutes ago. Thoughts so far:
1. Hinoto lying to Kamui appears as if it will become a theme.
2. I totally LoLed at the three month break between 10 and 11. It was only made funnier by a nice chunk of the gang going back to school. You gotta kill time some way, right? I kind of wonder what the other side was up to?
3. Fuuma!Kamui is so resourceful and efficient in comparison the the real Kamui. It's the kind of thing that makes you wonder if he's the one everyone was hoping that they would get on their side.
4. Smoking makes Subaru more powerful. Sort of a nasty dichotomy, no? Also, very nice moment here for Kamui and Subaru. He's already worried about the poor boy's health. Oh Kamui, you don't even know!
5. The side story at the end of 11 is about Subaru and it offers a nice look into his psyche. "Only a lost and ailing heart could dwell on just one person." With the incident involving the woman who kept her dead lover alive via witchcraft, he shows how he finds the lie that brings happiness preferable to the truth that tears one apart. And he's so contemptuous of her caretaker (mother? sister? ??), especially since the woman offers a selfish reason to end her charge's happiness. And yet, she waited to call on Subaru so that there was no way to bring the other one back from the brink of insanity. Did she want the woman to be in a mental/physical state in which she could do with her as she please? But, to get back on point, is Subaru willing to past by that point of sanity himself? Could he have been happy with the lie? What can he do now that there is no way back to that naive time? Of course, It should also be noted that, for Subaru, his love and the one who ended it are the same person. How does this factor into his choices?
These two volumes really seemed to mark time instead of push things forward. We get a few nice glimpses at characters but nothing really happens. But, as eleven ends with a showdown between Kamui, Subaru, and Fuuma, things promise to get more interesting next week.
