I finished Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go today in the interim between work and the ride home. I was, thankfully, able to withhold tears in the lobby. I was not so lucky last night. See, I went into this book warned that it was likely to rip out my heart and step on it. I even spoiled myself to certain plot points so that I wouldn't get worked up about them. And I managed around two-thirds of it without a problem. But then I got to the more "current" part of the story and I just broke down. What a kick in the gut...

You should read it. The movie is supposed to come out sometime this year, I believe. Mark Romanek is directing and it will star Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley. I knew that Knightly would be in it and then checked imdb once I got home to find out who she would play. It was reassuring that I had guessed correctly. I'm not that familiar with Mulligan but she seems to have had a good year career-wise last year. As for Romanek, I have a soft spot for One Hour Photo and all those music videos he directed in the 90s. But if they fuck this up I will be very unhappy.

I'm probably going to pick up Atonement next. I had a copy of the book around a year ago and then left it on the bus. But my brother got me another copy for Christmas. Balance was restored to my bookshelf. Afterwards, I'm going to try and pick up a copy of Rebecca Skloot's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I vaguely knew the story of how the cells from Lacks' biopsy became the first immortal human cell line in science. But I happened to read this article in the NYT about Lacks and the ethical issues that have arose around the use of those cells. And I realized that I didn't know anything about it. The book appears to be getting good early notices and its mixture of science and human drama seems right up my alley.

Bleach 391? My reaction: ha ha ha ha ha HA! Those where tears of joy. I will be pissed if this is illusion ret-conned.
