Summary: Happiness is a Warm Kitten

Written for [livejournal.com profile] 31_days. Promt December 1, Happiness/ ~I want happiness~

Happiness is a warm kitten. Alphonse has always believed this to be true.

When he was young he would smuggle farm kittens into his home, luring them inside with a small saucer of cream. The two of them would then lounge around his and Edward’s room. Al would lay next to the kitten as it noisily lapped up its treat. Once it was finished it would too full to move. So Al would snuggle with the kitten and the two would fall asleep in the middle of the floor. Al came to enjoy the way the cats smelled, a mixture of the many scents one can get from cavorting in the countryside, and loved the bit of heat they gave off as they lay on the cold floor. Either Ed or his mother would find them a few hours later and would decree that the cat would not be able to stay in the house. Al was always sad to see the kitten go but he was happy to at least have those few moments of joy with it by his side.

Though Al still enjoyed the company of kittens, he found that he needed new ways to experience them given his new limitations.

He still picked up stray kittens to take back to wherever he was keeping residence. He still watched them devour their cream with eager pleasure. However, once the kitten was full, Al would procure a small blanket or towel and would attempt to neatly lay it with his internal cavity. Then, carefully, he would pick up the kitten and place it inside. The first time he had done this, it felt so strange. He was able to feel the kitten walk around inside him and knead a place for itself on the blanket. But with time, this became pleasant. As the kitten would sleep, it would inevitably begin to purr, resulting in mild sound vibrations that would resonate within his torso. Had Al been capable to crying, he would have done so the first time it happened. Al missed many of the sensory experiences he had taken for granted as a child: the touch of another person, the smell of a warm summer day, and the taste of fresh fallen snow. At least, he recognized, he had not completely lost the joy he experienced when holding a kitten.
