I finished the first two episodes of Gurren Lagann about 20 minutes ago. Yes, I watched the dub on Sci-Fi. The subs came out too slow and I gradually lost interest, especially after it became evident that the series inspires people toward the crazy.
1. Kamina buys into his awesomeness so much that I have almost bought it as well. But he did make me laugh. And they did hint at something deeper in episode two. Let's just see if they can build on it.
2. Despite her obvious fan-service, I like Yoko. She's take charge and smart mouthed. But she's disturbingly shiny. No one else is near as slick looking. It's almost like she's been buffed and waxed.
3. Simon seems destined for non-entity status. I know that's not true but he just doesn't draw the viewer in the same way that the others do. But I love that his mech is so small. Even if I decide not to continue with the series, I would have no shame about owning a Lagann coffee mug. Or does he only scream coffee mug to me?
4. The animation often reminded me of FLCL. Yes, Gainax is behind both series, so similarities may seem like a given. But there were certain poses or the way certain things were sent flying into the air that plucked at the nostalgia strings.
I'll probably watch next week. But I'm not sure after that. I just haven't been in much of an anime mood.
