“I didn’t expect to find you here, Quincy.”

“Nor I you.”

They paced against each other, circling the arrancar that they had unwittingly killed together. He knew why he was there. He understood why his friends had decided to go into this frozen wasteland. He knew that the five of them, despite their differences and allegiances, possessed a sense of honor and nobility. Good people, as he surely believed them all to be, don’t leave their friends to rot in Hueco Mundo if they could help it.

A Kurotsuchi, regardless of any allegiance, wasn’t naturally capable of what Ishida considered to be honor. “Why are you here?” he asked.

“Father is missing a bit of research. He is quite convinced that it was stolen during the Rebellion. He believes this lost discovery to be one of the crown jewels of his work. So, he has chosen me to retrieve it. He believes that I’ll understand its importance once I see it.”

“I should have guessed,” he sighed. “Only your father would help Aizen.”

Then he paused. For a moment, he thought he noticed a small smile creep across her face. “I don’t think Aizen would refer to it as help. It’s more like a rivalry amongst comrades: who will think of it first, who can take it from the other, and who will succeed the most, with or without the other’s ‘assistance?’”

“That’s all well and good but I don’t think I can just leave you here.”

“That’s fine. I was thinking the exact same thing.”

“What do you suggest?”

“We go into this together,” replied Nemu. “I’m sure Urahara has told you much about Hueco Mundo and its inhabitants but I and my division have been studying the arrancar for much longer than either of you. I know more about them and their potential weaknesses. I can help you stay alive.”

“And I’ll help you retrieve this thing for your Captain?”

“Exactly.”

“Do I have a choice?”

“You do. I just wouldn’t suggest you choose some other choice.”

He sighed. “Well, come on! We’ve got work to do.”
