“We all know what kind of lie that was, don’t we?” asked Beth.

“Besides, you wouldn’t have been mistress anyway. I already had that position.”

“You abdicated at one point,” said Charity.

“Then dear Judith would have taken over,” answered Laura. “He was giving away things he didn’t have access to.”

“So it seems.” Charity turned to Beth and asked, “What did he promise you?”

“Happiness,” she sighed.

The other women audibly cringed. “That may be the worst lie of all,” said Jenny.

“What were you supposed to get, Laura?”

“Children. Old Edward was as sterile as a burned out room. I needed someone to help me out.”

“Well, you did have the children to show for it,” said Charity.

“So Quentin kept one promise,” said Jenny. “I’m almost impressed.”
